Laurel Joseph
Policy and Projects Officer (secondment)
London Borough of Sutton

In 2006 the London Borough of Sutton published a Physical Activity and Sport Strategy, one outcome of which was to implement an Active Workplace Charter. When the opportunity to participate in Activate Your Workplace arose, the London Borough of Sutton saw an opportunity to put into action their commitment to workplace health.

The Environment and Leisure Group, consisting of 916 mainly office based staff, was chosen to participate in the pilot of Activate Your Workplace. Laurel Joseph the Policy and Projects Officer was selected to take on the role of Workplace Health Champion.

Laurel has developed a range of successful interventions and uptake has exceeded expectations; within the first six months, over 200 people became actively engaged with the programme and a further 300 have been made more aware of the benefits of physical activity and well-being at work, through events and health presentations.

The success of the pilot has been recognised by the wider management at the London Borough of Sutton and will contribute towards a wider model for workplace health in Sutton.
